From the fire of desire to deep trust
Every love story goes through different stages, like an organism that grows and changes. The first is Eros, the passion. It is the energy of encounter, the force that draws two worlds together. Dopamine, the reward hormone, lights up in the mind, and everything seems perfect. But Eros alone is not enough: it is a flame that, if not nourished, will burn out.
Many relationships end when this intensity fades because people confuse love with excitement. But Eros is not love: it is the beginning of the journey. It is to bring us together, not to keep us together. When infatuation subsides, a deeper process begins: mutual discovery. This is where Philia, the friendship of love, is born.
Philia: the construction ofintimacy
Philia is the stage of stability. The brain adapts, oxytocin replaces dopamine, and the relationship becomes calmer. Here you learn about each other’s vulnerabilities, how to handle conflict, how to stay even when emotion wanes. It is the stage when the “we” becomes more important than the “I.”
Intimacy comes not from time spent together but from the courage to show oneself. Talk about one’s limitations, desires, fears. Saying “I need space today” without feeling guilty. Philia is the love of daily choice: the art of staying with presence, without compulsion. And it prepares the couple for the highest passage: agape.
Agape: love that liberates
Agape is the most mature form of love. It is not based on possession, but on freedom. It is the ability to see the other as soul, not as an extension of self. Agape does not fear distance, because he knows that authentic connection depends not on physical presence but on inner resonance.
It is love that is not nurtured by expectations, but by acceptance. At this stage, the relationship becomes an avenue for spiritual growth. Each crisis is no longer a threat, but an invitation to evolve. Not everyone arrives at Agape, but those who do discover that love is not an emotion, it is a state of consciousness. And once touched, nothing goes back to the way it was.
